Q&A

So... Why a butterfly?!

So glad you asked! Bellamie, my sona, is an acmon blue butterfly in honor of the xerces blue, that was declared extinct in the 1940s. People were pushing into the xerces blue's habitat in San Francisco's local sand dunes, the place the butterflies called home. Due to their habitat being destroyed, they went extinct. People tend to think most extinctions happen because of over-hunting, but actually most have similar stories of habitat loss. Of course there are stories of overhunting like with dodos, or far more nuanced stories of extinction like tazmanian tigers. But there are a lot of stories of species specialized for a very specific part of the world losing their habitat. When a niche for a species is erased in an ecosystem, they tend to die out permanently. Bellamie is an acmon blue, because acmon blues are a blue butterfly that have the potential of following the same fate as the xerces blue- if we're not careful.
